Blue Valentine may not be a classic like Casablanca or Star Wars, but when it came out three years ago, it set the indie film world a flutter with news of a festival darling that pleased critics and audiences alike. I just wasn’t in any of those audiences, not even when it screened in the 19th Annual Philadelphia Film Festival. Consequently, I have had to hush up whenever people around me discussed the brilliance of the film. For the next three years, I kept meaning to watch it, but was never quite in the mood to be depressed.

Dilcia's SXSW Experience

This year marked SXSW Film’s 20th edition and my first time attending. I was warned by many of SXSW’s chaotic nature because Austin converts into a hub of thousands of people in search of the latest innovations in music, technology, and of course film. The weather was nice, the food was awesome, and the lines were surprisingly easy to master – only requires a little bit of discipline to wake up early and obtain a Festival Exxpress pass for entrance priority.

After premiering at Cannes Film Festival, ‘The Sapphires’ came to Philadelphia for PFF21 and received as much fanfare as it did in France. Audiences embraced the true story of four talented young Aboriginal girls, plucked from obscurity and transformed into a soulful Motown-style singing group.

Now, the film based on the hit Australian play is open for all to see at the Ritz Five and to promote it, director Wayne Blair paid our good city a visit.

As of this morning, there is officially one week remaining in our Kickstarter campaign to get the Roxy Theater back to it’s former glory. And thanks to the 395 incredible backers so far, we’ve reached our goal of $40,000.00! With this post, we’d like to extend our most sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the cause to restore the last remaining independent theater in Center City.

While we here at the Philadelphia Film Society are eternally grateful for the contributions thus far, the proceeds from Kickstarter are only a small portion of what we require to fully restore the Roxy.

March is Women’s History Month, and we’re celebrating the best way we know how – by watching movies! There are dozens upon dozens of films that would be perfect to celebrate Women’s History Month, but I have chosen a select few. [b]Introducing the return of And You Call Yourself a Film Buff…! This series was started a couple of years ago by a former PFS intern in response to repeatedly hearing “You’ve never seen this movie?! This year marked my first time attending the Berlinale. Having never been to Berlin before, and knowing the importance of the Festival, I was very excited for the trip. Every Festival is a very distinct experience, and Berlinale is no exception. The industry presence is overwhelmingly international, even more so than Cannes, largely because of the proximity to Sundance (Berlin starts about 2 weeks after).
