Having recently returned from my annual trip to the Sundance Film Festival, which marks the beginning of the programming season for the Philadelphia Film Festival (PFF), I wanted to share some of my favorite films.

All in all, over my roughly five days in Park City, Utah, I was able to check out 24 films, many of which I enjoyed. Coincidentally, I’m sure, a lot of my personal favorites had nice Philly or PFF ties.

I read that Steven Soderbergh was looking to make a more beautiful, stylistic action film in the vein of the classic James Bond film From Russia With Love or the Michael Caine thriller Funeral in Berlin when he set about to make Haywire.

His other inspiration was professional mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano:

Soderbergh was flipping between channels late one night and stumbled onto one of Carano's fights. "I see Gina coming out.

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place last night and this year it was the 20th Philadelphia Film Festival that came out a big winner in terms of programming some of the most notable films of 2011.

From nominees to winners, last Fall's Festival shone through in many of the film-related categories. The Descendants, which won Best Picture and Best Actor (George Clooney) for Motion Picture - Drama, closed out the 20th PFF with a sold out crowd of almost 900 attendees.

I saw the Philadelphia Film Society screening of In the Land of Blood and Honey more than a week ago, yet I kept putting off writing my commentary. Why? Because I have a hard and fast rule when it comes to movie/film genres - I don't see war movies!  I've never seen Bridge Over River Kwai, Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, The Hurt Locker etc...

I'm certain Patton Oswalt(Spence from King of Queens) never thought he'd ever get a chance to have a love scene with Charlize Theron. His romance with Rachel Dratch on the TV series was most likely more romantic action than he'd ever thought to see as a character actor.

Surprisingly, it's the chemistry between these two actors which allows Young Adult to find its footing and likeability.
