PFS Sneak Preview: THIS MEANS WAR

Last night PFS members had a chance to see the new action comedy, This Means War. I was pleasantly surprised after seeing the film. The rom-com spy movie, originally scheduled to be released on Valentine’s Day, is clearly designed to be a date-night movie, which often end up falling flat. Although not the best rom-com to be released, the chemistry of the three lead actors (Tom Hardy, Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon) puts the audience in the perfect mood to enjoy the comedic scenes while the action adds excitement, making it an entertaining film. If you’re in the mood for a fun night at the movies, consider checking out This Means War, which comes out on February 17.

I took my girlfriend who is a pretty tough customer film-wise, and she loved it. If this film was designed to be a date night movie, they succeeded! Great for both genders. From us, four thumbs up!

Honestly, I was a little disappointed. I had higher expectations based on the trailers I had seen earlier and I just felt the movie didn't meet my expectations. I love Reese Witherspoon and I thought Chelsea had some great lines in the movie.

I thought the movie was very predictable and not a film that I'd recommend to anyone except maybe my mom or my grandmom... And, Tom Hardy has one HUGE front tooth that was distracting me from the movie. He has to get that thing fixed-- There's even a Facebook page called: Tom Hardy's Teeth-- come on, Tom-- get to the dentist!!

Ha! Didn't realize Tom Hardy's tooth but thought this was a fun role for him! Also think Chelsea was a great one to throw in the mix - she knows all the wrong things to say at just the right moments!

I did not like the movie; it's sort of amazing what kind of behavior is deemed perfectly acceptable and mass-market friendly if you just stick Reese Witherspoon in the middle of it. This is a movie about two stalkers who have no qualms about making video of the woman they claim to love having sex available to a bunch of their coworkers. Tom Hardy assaults a number of random civilians in order to appear tough, and the guys send the love interest's friend sailing off a freeway in her car for no apparent reason (risking her life). There's also a great subplot that implies that, if you avoid violent conflict with morons, your son will lose respect for you and be bad at sports, but if you meet violence with slightly more refined violence, your kid will be happy and achieve things.

I'd be fine with all of this is if the movie seemed remotely aware of what it was saying and played the whole thing as very black comedy, but it's just a big dumb "romcom" where everyone is fine and heroic at the end and we're actually meant to root for these psychopaths. Lovely message, thank you Hollywood.

I will say that Chris Pine did the best he could to be charming and charismatic, and that Chelsea Handler actually had a few funny moments (emphasis on "few). But they both shouldn't have bothered, given the movie that surrounds them.

It was definitely "light fare" but highly entertaining. Obviously, the plot was implausible but it was fun, and I think it appealed to a variety of peoples.

I enjoyed various episodes & I enjoyed the actors. And I did laugh at many scenes. However, the movie is definitely for a younger crowd who must have action & speed & sex before they will like the film.

For me it was too loud & action packed. The plot was predictable. Of course, everyone is happy with Lauren's(Reese's) choice because Tom Hardy had a beautiful wife who was happy to go back to him because he was a super action "hero". She was through with him before the action & chase scene was shown on TV.

Please remember she chose the guy who had lied to her throughout the fillm, pretending to be interested in her interests. That was no way to treat a lady & certainly not one you love.

I am sooo not a fan of romantic comedies .... but I LOVED this movie!!! Spoofed just enough to not be annoying and so entertaining! Great date night movie!

The actors are all very pretty, there were a few laughs, but I thought it pretty much sucked. It was a ridiculous, mostly predictable, very commercial film circa 2012, but those seem to be the only kinds of films where you can catch Reese Witherspoon these days. That's a shame, and a waste of talent. I also thought that Chelsea Handler was more or less wasted, and not in the wasted/drunk sense either. Some of her lines were funny, but most of them fell flat. I did like Tom Hardy, however, and I never noticed his tooth.

The movie was kind of fun and the main actors were endearing, but I found Chelsea grating and unfunny, and the whole thing felt oddly edited. There were a few strangely timed fade to black moments, and some dialogue seemed to be missing scenes to give it more context. wondering if this got hacked up before release

When computer programs become

When computer programs become sophisticated enough to write and direct movies, this may be the kind they create. Perhaps McG, who made the Charlie’s Angels films, is one. Carefully designed with an easy-to-describe high concept—CIA agent pals fight over Reese Witherspoon—it’s the perfect entertainment to sell to men and women, whether they like a little comedy, a little romance, or a little (choppily edited) action, and it’s unerringly pruned of any possible dull moments.

Of course, at least for awhile, you won’t expect a computer to create characters that seem like real people, or for the movie to spark the sorts of feelings one feels about real humans, but a certain type of formulaic humor will not be beyond the capacity of the machine. Most of the humor revolves around the guys’ predictable attempts to undermine each other’s attempts at seduction, and the scene involving some private viewed, very expensive art definitely made me chuckle. (How being a CIA agent gives you access to million-dollar paintings, or how one might explain this to a date who thinks he’s a cruise-ship captain, is one of several such situations that go unexplained.)

It’s pretty certain the real CIA didn’t cooperate with this, since the agents here show no qualms about spying on a coworker or private citizens who happen to be dating the coworker. I longed for the scene in which Reese’s character finds out how much her dates have been lying to and spying on her, but maybe that’s in the sequel. Then again, she herself lies too, at first inventing a boyfriend to impress her ex, then avoiding telling either of two about the other. The most interesting thing for me was watching how the potential sexual complications would be handled. (Hint: very conventionally.)

You won’t figure out who she winds up with by watching the date scenes—we never really see these characters connect, so any resolution would have made equal sense—but rather by using a simple romantic comedy truism, which is that no character, except a villain, can be allowed to be sad and alone at the end of the movie. Realize this and you can figure out what happens. In fact, though, you can skip the whole movie.

Silly entertainment!

I was not excited for this movie based on the trailers, but I wanted to see it for my girl Reese. Glad I came in with low expectations, because I was surprised to have had so much fun. Reese was funny and smart as usual, and the guys were genuinely charming.

All said, entertaining movie about friendship and how ridiculous romance can be.

An amusing date flick good

An amusing date flick good for a laugh, but with a ploddingly predictable plot. You can see who gets the girl from a mile off (though I was not without hope). With a galaxy of Hollywood celebrities and artists to choose from, I just wonder if it had to be Tom Hardy 'competing' with Chris Pine. The movie is funny where it matters though - two super spies with cool gadgets rivalling for a lady's affection. Not much insight to dwell over at the end, but a charming night's out to entertain yourself, with good friends or that romantic other. On an aside, can anyone imagine Tom Hardy in the role of Bane in Dark Knight Rises after this? What a difference a movie makes....
